  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Does snuffles always recur?

On the forum there are quite a few bunnies with chronic or severe snuffles, but I'd be interested to find out if anyone has had rabbits with one-off bouts, or years between episodes.

Mine has not had it for about a year and a half now and seems to be in excellent health.
She was very young when it happened, and it was a lot of sneezing but nowhere near as bad as some of the forum bunnies.
She has been fed a variety of dried herbs pretty much daily since, which may or may not have something to do with it not coming back.

It is not inevitable that a Rabbit will keep getting active symptoms of Snuffles after the initial episode. Some can have just the one and never have any more. Some may go for years without any recurrence and others may have numerous episodes or even chronic symptoms that never resolve.

There really is no way of predicting what will be the case for each individual Rabbit. Sometimes additional factors can play a part- Dental Disease for example, especially if tooth root elongation is involved

Inappropriate prescribing of several short courses of abx can lead to an abx resistance. This can be particularly problematic with Rabbits kept in colonies or in close proximity to other Rabbits. Abx prescribing is something that needs detailed consideration.

I think catching & getting it treated early is crucial as well, in most cases. Boris didn't get the treatment he needed straight away and I'm convinced that this contributed to his ongoing problems :(
