  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

sore hocks :(

I have noticed today that mumu has the early stages of sore hocks :( i have read some threads about it on here and covered his room in fleece blankets and put a vetbed down where he usually sleeps, do you think this will be ok to stop it progressing? i have my free vet check tomorrow anyway so will get it checked then but i'm panicking a bit as i've never experienced it before but constantly expect it in fern and check her every day! i never expected mu to be the one and i feel terrible as i didn't realise carpet could cause it :(:(

Sounds like you've done all the right things. Depending on how thick the fleece is you might want to put a double layer, I did this with some of my scabbier fleeces. Try not to beat yourself up about it - I had no idea about the carpet either when my bun's hocks kicked off. Just keep an eye on it which I'm sure you will do anyway, eventually my Oidhche's scabbed over and toughened enough that it wasn't a problem any more.

thank you thats very reassuring :) i've got loads of fleecey blankets so i'll double it all up and see what the vet says tomorrow!

My Willow had the start of a sore hock and I did exactly that and made sure the vetbed was always dry.. the sore Has now gone...

Good luck
