  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi, my mini lop Jack had sticky bottom syndrome he came from a very bad place we went to the vets they shaved around his bum and ever since he has been fine as he has unlimited amounts of hay and a hay stick everyday, but it is getting a little sticky again I have been washing it but I dot think he's eating his pop because he can't reach it because its getting stuck in his fur, how can I safely cut his bum he has been castrated? Also he keeps humping my female she is spayed too and I'd say she is the dominant one any ideas for both?

Hi, how much pelleted food do you give them? Sticky bottom is usually caused by excess cecals and you need to try to get to the bottom of why he is having excess cecals if you can, which can be caused by too much dry food or sometimes too much veg or too much of the wrong types of veg (eg too many carrots or apple, that sort of thing). Does he have any dental problems? Has he had his teeth checked?

When you say he can't reach, do you mean he has a physical problem preventing him from being able to cecotroph or are you just worried he might not be eating them because the excess ones are being stuck to his tail? Is he overweight?

I think it is normal at the moment for a little bit of humping as buns get 'spring fever' around this time of year as it warms up and the sunlight levels increase - my buns Twinkle and Star have been doing it.

Thank you and yes he gets spurs on his teeth because of the shape of his face but got checked 2 weeks ago and they don't need doing he got weighed and is a normal weight and I give Lucy and Jack a small handful of excel pellets they have veg 2-3 times a week and they have dandelions, broccoli etc they have about a small handful of those too x
