  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Any ideas?

A none rabbit savvy facebook friend who has a 4 year old rabbit has just sent me this message:

I need your advice please....smudge my rabbit of four years today his face is dusty and back of his ears and under his mouth his fur is like stuck down any advice?

First thing that came to mind was has he had his head stuck any where?'

the second thing was could it be some sort of mite? I haven't seen him so have no idea. Next week is Rabbit Awareness Week and vets are doing free health checks on buns. I suggested she take him to one that I know is quite close to where she lives.

Impossible to say what it may be from the description, but personally I would advise her to get the Rabbit checked over by a Vet today

If the fur is all 'stuck down' it will irritate the skin and lead to more problems

It may even be the result of excessive salivation due to dental problems, so really not something that can be left til next week

Another possibility is a severe otitis and all the gunk and debris from the ear canals is now stuck around his chin due to him having lop ears. If this were to be an issue then a Vet consult today is an absolute essential.

He is also going to be at high risk of flystrike

Thanks Jane. WIll pass this on. I have asked her to let me know so will update the post with any news.
