Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help! I think Benji has sore hocks.

BigBunnyBenji

Mama Doe
I came down this morning and found patches of blood on the carpet and saw that Benji's foot is bleeding and he appears to have pulled away some of the fur on his foot.

He isn't kept in bad conditions at all, he's a houserabbit kept on carpet, and I clean his litter tray every day, twice a day. He doesn't have nails too sharp either as I took him to the vets a couple of weeks ago for a trim and the vet said even then they weren't really in need of it. He is a giant and I have read that they can be prone to sore hocks, but what do I do?

Do I need to take him to the vets? He is using the foot and isn't showing signs of being in pain, but I've never dealt with this before so I don't know!

I am not an expert on sore hocks as never experienced it but I do know that carpet can trigger this condition. Grass is the best substrate for these rabbits but obviously if that isn't a possibility then something very soft eg deep hay. Some put fleeces down. It has to be something the rabbit's feet sink into so he isn't putting too much weight on that part of his foot. Hope you get it sorted. Someone with more experience will be along shortly.

Thanks. :thumb:

I've booked him an appointment at the vets, just in case. I am actually waiting to put Benji outside, he is having a custom run made, so hopefully it should be done within a week or so, he will be on concrete then. I have been letting him run around on the grass when the weather has been nice and he loves it. :)

The vets is a good idea, they'll be able to have a proper look and see what the problem is. It might be sore hocks or he could have caught it on something.

If it is sore hocks concrete isn't the best flooring as it has no give so they tend to rock back on their heels. I think out doors people often use rubber matting designed for horse stables so that might be an option for you.
