Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Rabbit having an operation on monday...

Hiya! Firstly, i'm new to this so i apologise if i'm doing anything wrong.

I took my rabbit Chino to the vet yesterday because i'd noticed he lost a bit of weight and his eyes are really watery. She discovered his back teeth have overgrown. One is digging into his cheek and the other into his tongue. He's always had a really good diet & always eaten everything he's supposed to, so they think it's genetic. She prescribed him with 0.8ml of Metacam so he can have some pain relief until Monday.
Anyway now he has to have an operation on Monday and i'm so scared. I just came home and cried with him in my arms infront of the tv all night.
I got freaked out because my vet said rabbits have a high risk of not making it through anesthetic.

I'm not entirely sure i have a specific question here, i just feel like i need to talk to some people who would understand how i'm feeling. So i thought, surely a rabbit forum is the right place?
Maybe if your rabbit has been under anesthetic, how did that go? Is it common for rabbits to die under anesthetic?

Nice to meet you all anyway!

Hi  I have 2 dental rabbits who need dentals every 7'ish months. They can be groggy afterwards and take their time getting back into eating their hay/pellets but they're fine :)

Of course there are risks with anaesthetic but if he didn't have the dental, he would basically starve to death. The risks are very small if your vet is rabbits savvy:) Do you think she is? If so, you don't need to worry :)

What is his diet currently?

I think she's quite savvy yeah! She seemed to know a lot more than previous vets we've visited. Some of them were useless, didn't even bother to check his teeth. I think that might be why they're so bad now.

His diet is mainly hay and pellets. Fresh veg and some of those crunchy high-fibre sticks.

it's always a worry when they need to go in for an op. with a rabbit vet, it should be a straight forward and low risk op so try not to worry too much. maybe post a new thread asking for someone to recommend a good vet in your area

Hiya

It's awful when they go in for an operation, I cry every time

But in the right hands there is a very high success rate. All 4 of mine are neutered/spayed and recovered fine.

Try not to worry. Just be ready with lots of his favorite foods to tempt him to eat afterwards ;)

I would be very worried about the vet being competent if he/she said that rabbits have a high risk of not making it through aneasthetic. Nowdays, improved anaesthesia techniques mean that there is a very low risk.

I would definitely ask for a rabbit specialist in your area.

My Pebbles had a mallocluded molar on one side. He never ate hay, either because of his teeth or because he'd never had hay prior to me adopting him. I tried reducing his hay down to get him to eat more hay (on my vets advice) and Pebbles lost weight and went into stasis. I found that to prolong the time between dentals, I had to actually increase his high fibre pellets up to 60g a day. Pebbles had dentals every 9 months, and was fine with anaesthetic...although he was very groggy when one vet gave him sedative as well.

Normally he would start eating normally again within a week, but 2 months ago he stopped eating and had 2 dentals in a month. My vet took x-rays and said his teeth roots were fine. I took him to a specialist who took x-rays and he showed me that his lower molar roots were pushing into his lower jaw bone which was becoming deformed.

So I would reccomend getting a good specialist and suggest getting an x-ray done at the same time as the dental.
