  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How long does it normally take for fur to grow back?

Alison Marie

Wise Old Thumper
Buttons was spayed about 8 weeks ago and she still has a fairly bald tummy where they shaved her for the op  how long until we see the fur regrow as normal?

All buns are different, depending on breed etc.My late girl Cleo was spayed and within a week her fur had grown right over the wound. She was a cross lionhead/minilop.

Hmm, Buttons is a lionlop so she's furry everywhere and then a little bald patch. She is moulting at the moment so I guess it won't be as noticeable but at the minute I feel bad when I see her belly flop and she's got a big pink patch haha.

My Inca once got her side shaved for an ultrasound and it honestly took about 8 months before it grew back!

I honestly couldn't believe how quickly she had fur growing back. She had dissolving stitches, though she had a chew at one of them, not enough to need further treatment though.I miss my little otter blue Cleo ,she was four when she went to the bridge.:(

It won't grow back until the next moult. Depending on whether she's moulted that part of her coat yet this year it may be a very short time or a very long time. Some of mine are half way through the moult and some are only just starting.

Yes this happened with Thumper's ears which were partly shaved for his dentals. It all depended on his moult cycle.
We also had to shave his tummy one hot year. He was getting frightingly hot despite all measures. His fur didn't start to grow back until the autumn moult.

On the other hand Benjie has had 2 dentals & the fur starts to grow back on his ears within a week.
