Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pasteurella infection in eye.

yvette

Wise Old Thumper
My 4 yr old nethie BB was diagnosed with pasteurella in his eye on tuesday.
I noticed the weeping eye on sunday night so bathed it and booked to see the vet the tuesday as my vet Ian wasnt working the monday.
By monday afternoon the eye was full of pus so I quickly arranged an appt and got him to see another vet.
She prescribed an abx inj, and a metacam inj along with drops for his eyes (pain) and said Id need to see Ian on the tuesday, saying she wasnt sure.(Its a new practice for me as Ian has left one and joined this one with me following, as hes a bunny specialist.)
She said something about uvitis and glaucoma.
Went back the following day and saw Ian.The infection is bad..really bad and not what was decribed to him on the phone the previous day.
He took photos for comparison, prescribed more abx drops, baytril oral, metacam and zantac as hes not really eating and just took a bite of apple yesterday.
Ian says we can save the bunny but might not save the eye and Im a bit scared for my lad.
Im also bathing the eye with sterile water from the chemist.
Ive been trying to syringe critical care but he spits it out so I dab it on his mouth and he licks his mouth thus taking it that way.Its not alot but we are trying.

Poor lad

I hope the antibiotics get on top of the infection and that BB will be feeling better very soon xx

Its really bad Jane.Ian has seen it before but not this bad..we might not be able to save the eye but we are trying...

Even if it is worst case scenario and he has to lose the eye it is totally possible for the Bunny to cope. If the sight is lost in the effected eye it is of no use anyway, so the Bun wont miss it at all. Hopefully it wont come to that and the abx will do the trick xx

I hope the abx are successful and BB's eye can be saved.

If it does result in the removal of the eye, which I hope it doesn't, bunnies do cope perfectly well. I know of a number of one-eyed bunnies, I have one myself, my conti Bentley.

Sending loads of vibes for BB. xx
