Hi
Ive got a female lionhead whos around 1 now. Considering getting her spayed. Ive read all the benefits eg risk of cancerreduced eetc. Are there any cons to getting her done? Also will it calm her down as shes quite temperamental.
Thank you

Hello,

Welcome to the forum.

For a female bunny in particular the pros far, far, far, far, outweigh any risks, and it's much better to have your bunny spayed whilst still young then wait until she's older.

As with any surgery in any human or animal, of course there are always tiny risks of complications with the anaesthetics or the recovery afterwards, but as there's an 80% chance your bunny will at some point get uterine cancer if left unspayed then these risks are absolutely worth taking, especially as rabbit surgery has improved so much recently. I'm going to get my boy castrated next week and am also a very nervous owner but have decided it's well worth it- and he hasn't even got the risks of uterine cancer!

Your bunny will also probably calm down and not be so hormonal after spaying.

What is your bunny's set up- is she indoors or outdoors? She'd probably like a friend- if she's spayed you could rescue her a castrated male to live with her

Anyway it sounds like you're doing just the right thing for her but are having last minute nerves, just like me and my bunny! I'd say go for it, of course there is a tiny risk, but imagine if a few years down the line she got uterine cancer and then would need an op anyway, she'd be older and have this health problem and it would be more dangerous then... and you'd wish you'd spayed her now!

Best of luck and I hope you stay on the forum- do add some photos, we love seeing pictures of bunnies!

Thanks, I am seriously considering it very soon, also because of her attitude, shes lovely when she wants but can be nasty when she doesn't! Hopefully will calm her down.

Shes an indoor rabbit, got her cage which she sleeps in at night and then has the run of the flat for most of the day apart from when the chinchillas having a run around! Cute seeing then sniffing each other when he goes for a nosy on top of her cage!!

Ive just put a photo on of her at Christmas! Do you think she looks like a full lionhead from what you can see?
