  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Showing signs of pain

Crunchie

Warren Veteran
Jack and Honey have been out and about today and Jack was fine up until my mum tried to give him a brush (he's moulting heavily at the moment).

He had a massive sulk, went and sat in the hut then decided he was no longer interested in food. At that point my mum phoned me and asked me to come over and check him so I drove over. By the time I got there he was showing signs of pain and was not his usual self at all. He refused the pellets he normally goes mad for, was stretching oddly, flattening himself to the floor or sitting hunched up. I decided to phone the vet school and we took him there as we weren't comfortable leaving him in the state he was in.

When we got there he looked considerably brighter and all his vital signs were OK. His teeth looked good and there were gut sounds and fully formed poops awaiting "evacuation". His stomach felt fine along with his cecum and his temperature was apparently spot on.

The only thing the vet could see was a scratch inside his ear so he's now in the vet being monitored and is receiving anti-inflammitory ear drops and metacam. As he's suffered them before the vet also checked his ear wax for signs of ear mites but there was none.

Was just wondering if anyone could shed any light on the situation, is it at all possible that my mum brushing him has freaked him out to the point where he went into stasis and this has resolved itself very quickly? He was eating hay and herbs when we left the vet but all his little behaviours are exactly the same as what Honey does when she has gut problems.

maybe he had a gassy tummy at the onset of the pain, especially if he had been out grazing on spring grass. The gas may then have dispersed by the time he got to the Vet

The ear issue may have been an incidental finding, not a contributory factor

Hope he is feeling much better by now xx
