Lionheads coat question....

Jojo123

Mama Doe
Do Lionheads lose their long coat in the summer? Buster has got a patch of short fur both sides by his shoulders and it looks a bit patchy. Hes a indoor bunny and it is very warm in the house

I find mine get a small bald patch on their neck which long fur usually covers but shows a little more in summer. It's still long, just thins out a bit.

Imogen looks like she's going bald around her neck (where she is most fluffy) it looks patchy and clumpy and weird but when I examine her it's all there still so I think she is just thinning out

Mine too is thining on his neck, just the long hair on the sides seems to be going and short hair is there. Hes skirt is thining but not patchy like his sides

I wouldn't worry too much, after all moulting at summer is so that their coats are shorter :) they look a bit daft for a while but shouldn't be a problem :)

Rosie has started to moult I think. She is starting to look more scruffy then usual. She was having trouble deciding when she should do it. One week it's hot and sunny, the next it is cold as anything
She gets this on the back of her neck where the hair is thinned out and so you can see through it more clearly when she has her head stretched out.

Marley is part lionhead and has the bald patch at the back of his neck. He's currently turning from very black and slightly brown to quite brown!

My lionhead crosses have a much thicker and longer tuft between their ears in winter. One has a tuft that gets up to about 6" long. Some also have much more pronounced tufts on their cheeks. Those that are permanently outdoors have much thicker coats anyway in winter. In summer they all lose the bulk of their mane and have much thinner (but still obvious) tufts / manes. As they are all crosses, their coats vary quite a bit anyway. Some only have a small tuft between their ears. Others have quite a full coat and mane. Some are woollier and some are silkier. So it depends on the individual and how warm their surroundings are.

Peabody had a big shed the other week and in the last couple weeks it has slowed, but the changes have been more noticeable. She always has a baldy patch on the back of her neck! At the beginning though she looked ridiculous, as she had a very obvious split between winter/summer about half-way up.

Her coat is now lighter, shorter and her mane (and skirt) have thinned out. She looks like a much smaller bunny, especially in the face as her 'beard' thins out too! She is also a slightly 'brighter' colour, with less mottled brown in the mix. I used a furminator during our last grooming session (Friday) for the first time (I have read all about people's various experiences and yes, I was careful) and it worked very well on the back half of her coat, which was the thickest. I used the regular slicker brush on the rest, as it seems to have already finished thinning out!
