You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Buying long term prescription meds online....any good, reputable companies?

As I have found out Pebbles has a congestive heart condition, and will be on meds for the rest of his life, I am looking into getting his precription meds online to save costs.

I am very wary about buying online..eg. are the tablets what they say they are (heard too many stories about fake human drugs from online companies) so would really appreciate any recommendations of good reputable companies in the UK so that I can compare prices and get an idea how much I'll need to put aside each month.

thanks

Michelle

I spelled it wrong  it's benefortin...and they do sell it at 45p per tablet. However they do not sell the Frusemide duiretic in 10 mg tablets, only 20 and 40mg. Hopefully he will only need the Benefortin long term. It's amazing how much cheaper the tablets are online compared to from the vets!

Morse is now on the same drug xx

How is Morse doing on it? Hopefully he is responding well to treatment.

I'm just off to my mum's to borrow her pill cutter as the 10mg frusemide don't look easy to cut in half, and she has a tablet cutter.

Unfortunately Pebbles isn't eating much...I'm back to mashing soaked pellets with a sprinkle of apple, so I'm hoping I can grind his tablets and mix in wth his "baby food". I really don't want to waste any tablets as they are expensive from the vets!

Please can I ask how your vet diagnosed your rabbit to having congestive heart condition i.e what tests were done? What were his symptoms?

Many thanks xxx

Pebbles has had a history of dental problems, which have confused the issue, so when he stopped eating about 8 weeks ago, he went in for routine dental work. However, he didn't start eating properly as usual, and stopped eating again after a week. A different vet gave him gut stimulant & metacam, but a week later he stopped eating again, so more gut stimulant and metacam. A week later he went in for x-rays and another dental by my usual vet, who said that his heart "had something around it" but he didn't think it was related to Pebbles not eating, but could be. A week later, Pebbles still wasn't eating properly although he was still on metacam.

Wednesday evening Pebbles started coughing while eating. By Thursday morning he was coughing while drinking, and then while just laying down. This time I took him to the specialist at Trinity in Maidstone and Mark took full bloods and another x-ray. From the x-ray, Mark could tell that the heart was enlarged and pushing up on the trachea (causing Pebbles to think he has something stuck in throat and start coughing). The bloods also showed an infection (though I wasn't clear whether this was related to the heart condition). He did explain that the enlarged heart pushes on the lungs and that fluid gets in the lungs, which is why he needs a duiretic too.

So the diagnosis is really from history and x-rays.

Forgot to say, Mark started Pebbles on the meds last night and kept him in till lunchtime today when I brought him home. he has eaten ground soaked pellets & apple, and been drinking water OK, and he hasn't coughed at all since I've had him home.

I am actually amazed at how quickly it has helped. He has only had 3 doses and already his heart sounds much more 'normal'. Initially it was all over the place, missed beats and everything.

Wow glad to hear he is much better!

x-rays showed me my rabbit had a normal shaped/sized heart, which is why we are treating for lung infection. If no improvement next week we may treat for heart disease next, not sure yet.

As you say, it can cause fluid on the lungs, which he has shown up on x-rays. But his heart looks fine.

Good luck with finding the meds x:wave:

We never got our heart meds online as the vet would only give us a small amount of tablets at a time as they wanted the bunny to have regular check ups. So with the cost of the prescription each month it ended up cheaper buying more expensive tablets from the vets

So glad Morse is improving so quickly. I just hope he continues to get better...it really is such a worry

I am hoping that mark will give me a prescription for at least one month..maybe a repeat prescription as he said he will be on these for the rest of his life, and he does really seem to want to keep costs down.

Yes we got them monthly but with £9 prescription cost it canceled out the saving. I guess it depends on the dose Trevor was only Tiny so only on a quarter tablet of vetmedin
