  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

New Kit
My rabbit is 7 years old and is no longer able to clean her bum. She also has nerve damage to her back right leg and i now give her met-a-cam once every day, she struggles to move around sometimes. About 2 weeks ago i noticed her breathing was very heavy so i took her to the vet who diagnosed her with the snuffles. She makes wheezing noises sometimes when she lies down and last night she had discharge coming from her nose. I am giving her 1ml of antibiotics twice a day but they dont seem to be helping and i think she is getting worse. I have noticed she is pointing her head in the air as if she is trying to breath. When she is breathing i can see up her nose which makes me think she is having difficulty. Also she has began making a noise when she pees and i dont know if this is connected to the snuffles or if she has an infection. She is still eating and drinking but not as much as usual. She is due back at the vet in a week but i dont know if i should take her sooner and i dont know if it is kinder to have her put down. Any advice would be helpful.

Sorry to hear this.
7 isnt old for a rabbit, I mean dont get me wrong she is no spring chicken.
Average age for medium sized buns can be 8-12 years.

Is she spayed?
Is your vet rabbit savvy?

I would get her to an exotic pet specialist as soon as you can, if she gets the correct treatment she may well live on for another few years.

Snuffles is a horrible illness and im sure you'll have many ups and downs with her as most of us who have snuffles buns will know. Have the vets given you anything to help break down the mucus, such as bisolvon? A good tip that i found works is putting them in a steam filled bath room as it helps clears the mucus, just like having a sauna. I also put a few drops of albus oil in the water, it works well but needs doing daily really depending on how bunged up they are. It maybe harder if bunny is outdoors because of the change in temperature. If its chronic and remains to be a problems it will be worth getting a nebulizer. Your vet should be able to provide the cocktail that needs to go in it if they are rabbit savvy enough, if not you'll need a new vet to see that she gets through it. I hope bunny gets better soon

How is it caught?

About half of all rabbits generally carry it but its dormant or controlled by their immune systems so they are never actually effected though they can pass it on. Its caught through general contact so comes off hands/clothes/other rabbits etc.

Some rabbits only show signs of it when stressed and it goes away but some rabbits are effected by it through out their whole lives in which case needs life long antibiotics/treatment.

i have already put her in a steamed room but my vet has not given me anything to clear the mucus as it only started yesterday. Also does anyone have an easier way to give medicine as my rabbit is becoming annoyed and restless.

If she is raising her head to breathe this is a medical emergency and she needs to be admitted to the Vet for intensive care

She would need medication given by injection, giving oral meds to a Rabbit in Respiratory Distress is potentially very dangerous

She is also likely to need to be put on Oxygen

The best thing you can do for her is take her straight to the Vet this afternoon

Good Luck
