  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi all. After 9 weeks of treating my bun Harrys ear infection without success the vet said today she feels it has gone into his middle or inner ear and has refered me to a vet in Swindon. If the infection persists there is an option of an operation which is tricky and often of no help and the prognosis is poor.
:cry:He has been on Canaural,Aurizon and then Baytril drops for his ears and Baytril orally along with good old Metacam pain relief.
Obviously im devastated. He is the loveliest little bun and has been thruogh such alot.On top of everything he has Pastuella which is making things more complicated.
I "rescued"him from PAH because i was alarmed at his condition-Pasturella again-and i slowly but surely got him well again.Towards the end of last year he got EC from one of my other rescues who came to me with EC.
Any advice would be so appreciated.I may have to decide if he should have the operation-what do i do?
Icant be without him hes only 2.:( I love him so much

I can sympathize with you my Finley had horrific ears and I made the decision to have both his ears operated on. It was a difficult decision it is invasive and carries some risks facial paralysis etc but I dont regret the decision. I had another 8 happy months with my boy before I lost him to a foreign body then E-cuniculi
It is a hugely personal decision however I made my decision by thinking of Finley I.e could he handle being away from me for surgery then after care, would he allow me to syringe feed him and did he seem happy enough to continue. The answer was yes and like I say I never regretted it but I think you need to speak to the specialist and be aware of exactly whats involved.
Good luck with your decision and vibes and hugs for harry

Thankyou for your reply.Harry is abit down about having his meds and i know he def isnt feeling well-non of his lovely binkies, side flops or running around like a lunatic but i think if he could decide hed say yes.Its so hard cos i dont know how he will cope wth it all.:(
Im hoping we can explore more med options first i dread making the decision.I dont know what they would be:?
Just in shock really. Each week i think there is a small improvement and then the weekly vet visit proves otherwise.

Aww thanks thats very kind:)
Hes really busy this evening-im sitting up watching him and hes quite happy and relaxed. He even did a very little binky!Havent seen one of those for weeks! That on the day im told he may have to be pts if the operation he may have on ears is deemed too much for him!
Does not compute:?:?:?
Im gonna fight every step of the way for my boy;)

Oh dear, I'm so sorry :(
What a difficult decision. I don't know all the details so won't advise but I think you'll be able to make the right decision for him if the vet tells you all the potential risks and benefits. Let us know what you decide, vibes for you both

Thankyou so much:thumb:
We are booked into a referal clinic in Bristol on monday week.In the meantime ive asked them to advise my vet on stronger antibiotics as we have a little wait til then. The Baytril isnt helping.I just HOPE we have some joy with this.Harry just wants noserubs all the time-hes quiet but eating and drinking but i know his ears hurt despite having Metacam.
Im so worried but i know he wants to fight this whatever we have to do.
