  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Getting Another Bun - But Not Bonding. Vaccination Advice

DwarfBuns

Warren Scout
Just after a bit of advice really. I've seen a beautiful male bun that I would love to rescue, he has no front teeth! Because he's male & younger than Niles, I don't plan to attempt bonding. Because of this, the new bun will have to live outside with a bonded wife (eventually). Niles currently lives indoors.

My problem is this: Niles isn't vaccinated & I don't think he can be. The Vet won't do it while he is snuffly, despite there not really being anything wrong with him. Tried baytril & it did nothing. He only really wheezes when stressed. He's absolutely fine otherwise. Chest is clear, heart is good. I think it's his nose that is the problem. The Vet said if the baytril didn't clear it (which I knew it wouldn't, it's not bacterial) then he would like to do more tests.. I don't want Niles to have that stress. Especially after just losing Frasier!! So basically, he can't be vaccinated.

Where do I stand with a new bun? If I get the new one vaccinated, will that help? Or am I genuinely better off not adopting another rabbit? The last thing I want is for Niles to get myxo or VHD!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If Niles cannot be vaccinated then he will have to take the chance of catching something whether or not you have other rabbits.

How stressful would the tests be?
Would it be worth waiting until you can do the tests to see if he can be vacinated before getting another bun?

What has been tested for already, is it just antibiotics that's been tried?
perhaps a different course of antibiotics will help. Or it could be allergies, Angel get's a bit sneezy when the hay is too dusty or the pollen count is high.

I think those are the things to be sorting out first then deciding to get another bun. :)
