  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I don't know what to do :(

I have to take my bunny to the vets every month to get her teeth burred. And it's stressful today the vet cut her mouth and blood everywhere I refused pay for the anti inflam so got it free. Every time I go they tell me I should consider having them removed. It's an expensive op but I'm so frightened I will lose her as she is such a fragile bunny. Often I'll. I dno if I can put her thru it and lose her :( I really am so upset they have cut her today and what do u think x

I'm so sorry this has happened - you are, understandably, very upset.
My first thought would be to find a rabbit-savvy vet (ie an exotics expert/vet specialising in rabbits)) as I certainly wouldn't be happy if vet cut her mouth.

You could perhaps start a thread 'vet needed in .............' to see if someone can recommend one to you.

When you say its stressful do you mean she has a concious dental?

If so they will not be able to do as good a job using this method as they can under GA, which may be why you are needing them so often.

You could try having them burred under GA and taken back as far as possible if you feel this is less invasive than removing the teeth - I've never had teeth removed from a bun so I'm not sure what it involves.

Agree with Babsie - you need to find a bunny-savvy vet . My bun had to have many dentals, because of molar spurs, but my vet could do them with bunny awake and there was absolutely no problem - he had them for many years. A rabbit savvy vet is a must if your bun has dental problems - it is not accpetable for your vet to cut your bunny's mouth and I certainly wouldn't go back there! Good luck in your search for a new vet.

Definitely find an exotic vet specialist. There is no way I would want to take my bunny back to one that cut her mouth or let her have an op there.

I thought all dentals should be done under GA but I've never experienced teeth problems in bunnies yet and Doughnut is only young.

Hi there,

I have exactly the same with one of my bunnies, top and bottom teeth grow long and at odd angles and I now have to take her back every three weeks and she is only 16 months old. They told me about the operation and said it would cost about £130.00 which I don't mind but I don't like the idea of her being cut open and in pain afterwards, she has also had an abcess under her chin last year which was probably due to the teeth and she will not eat her hay.

I personally would, if the teeth are that bad, consider having them removed. My vet is a dental specialist on bunnies and guinea pigs, and I have been in the same situation as yourself 3yrs ago, and Simon taking the teeth out was the best thing ever, and my bunny coped really well with just a few adjustments being made, such as softening the pellets, that kind of thing. It was just brilliant that then he was never in pain anymore with his teeth, and didn't have all the stress of monthly dentals, which had to be done under GA. Also, because my bunny was a severely disabled bunny, it wasn't even an option really to keep having monthly GA's, as he was far too high risk as it was.
