  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Which drug post spay?

So my little foster girls have gone in for their spay today.

Is it metacam I should be asking for? I know my rabbits weren't given anything when they were spayed and I didn't know to ask for anything, so I want to make sure that we have it if they are likely to need it.

Yeah metacam :) if they say they've been given one already just say that you know they will have done but it's wears off in 24 hours, how would they like to have their inside bits taken out and have no pain relief for the following days? ... :p

Great, thanks for that!

Oh Aly, I meant to ask you - is it normal for hamsters to stare at you? Luna keeps standing at the front of her cage, holding the bars and just staring at me! I don't know what she wants!!

Well.. I've always assumed it was normal as Apollo is a serial starer  He sometimes does it if he's trying to figure out who it is. Usually though he wants a bit of ball time (he has a rat ball), playtime in the bath or wants me to talk to him. He usually gets bored pretty quickly though and just wants his wheel again :lol:

 okay then, she freaks me out sometimes - I just say 'Luna, I have no idea what you want???!!!!'

I was also given an antibiotic and fibreplex with Doughnut. She had metacam for 7 days, I don't think she needed it for that long. The fibreplex gets their gut going and she loves it so easy to give!

I always put my meds on a tiny bit of weetabix as Doughnut hates being picked up and gets stressed.

Good luck.

Don't forget to get lots of herbs and veg in as normally this tempts them to eat. They normally don't want pellets for a day or so.
