  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What do I need to do? Evan has tested positive for E.cuniculi so is on lapizole (as is Dana) do I just use normal bleach for their environment? What about carpets etc?

Hi,im sorry that Evan has EC.Two of my buns have had this-one of my rescues brought it with him when i had him.
They both fully recovered without lasting effects. My vet strongly advised that they stay on Lapisole for 6 weeks instead of the usually recommended 28 days to be absolutely sure and they were recently retested while investigating another health issue and were completely clear.Perhaps you could ask about this as its the new recommended guideline.
I think the normal is to use bleachy water on everything on day 21 of their treatment and day 28.The dilution i used was 1 part normal bleach/30 parts water.Iactually carried on using the solution for awhile after they were better as i wanted to be sure, but it probably wasnt necessary.Obviously dry everything really well after washing in bleachy water.
I dont know about carpet-hope someone can help you there.EC can live in the environment for 2=3 months so if they could stay off the carpet for that time while the EC dies off-but i appreciate that there might not be an alternative.
Hope hes ok.
