  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How many of you have had successful molar removal (or unsuccessful)?

Following up from previous thread about Pebble's ongoing molar dental problems and suggestion of molar extraction, how many of you have had a bun go through this procedure?

Was it successful or unsuccessful and where did the procedure take place? i.e. was it with a dental specialist?

And finally any idea of costs involved?

Thanks.

Me! Well Scarlet.
She has had 3 back teeth removed because they were growing at all angles and causing repeated dental work.
Francis Harcourt Brown did it, so yes a specialist.

If Scarlet's teeth were healthier, she would have opted for the killing the pulp technique which kills the tooth so it stops growing but leaves it there as a peg (they will eventually fall out). Scarlet's teeth on her bad side are not normal healthy teeth, they are discoloured and very mottled so FHB opted to removed instead. The poor state of the teeth probably makes them easier to remove. She did warn us they could grow back but 6 months on for the last ones, and 11 months on from the first ones they haven't.

The cost the first time was £250 but the initial referral was £60 and we had x-rays done.
The second time it was £120ish but the repeat referal was only £35.
On both occasions Scarlet and Ori were both there overnight. 2 nights the first time and one night the second. FHB is actually cheaper than our regular vet for dental work!

Hope this helps. I wouldn't let anyone other than a very specialist vet do this kind of work. Our own vet wouldn't even consider it as he says it is out of the scope of all but a real rabbit specialist.

As for success, she's not had a dental for 10 months and she was having them every 10 to 12 weeks.

Charlie has had all his molars and premolars removed down the left side. They were wobbly, growing uneven and there was infection there.

They were removed by an exotics specialist, cost about 400 quid. Home the same day as he was eating immediately (surprised us all)

Not sure if i can comment on effectiveness- he recovered quickly amd ate well but the infection was already quite bad, and now we're treating an abscess. Definitely the right rhing for Charlie though

The only exotic specialist I know of in Kent is Trinity at Maidstone, which is still over an hour away, and I'm not sure if they specialise in rabbit dentistry...but I'll phone them tomorrow and make enquiries.

You could start another thread asking for recommendations.

It's just over an hour for us to get to FHB but she keeps them in after the consult to reduce travelling and does them either that afternoon or the next day.
Good luck.
