  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mysterious Lump - Update

Alpha Buck
Hello

I haven't been on here for a number of years and I have two 9 year old buns - Ron and Ginny

Ron has developed of hard big lump on the back of his neck. His behaviour, mannerisms, eating and pooing has not changed and he is not in pain that is why we are not taking him to the vets until after Easter. Apart from an allergy against barley straw he is in excellent health.

Has anyone had a similar situation? I thought I would ask because I know if I google it I will only just scare myself and/or get myself upset.

Thanks for listening to me ramble.

There are lots of possibilities as to what it is

An abscess
A Tumour
A Cyst

If he has had any injections/vaccinations recently it may be a local soft tissue reaction

Is it mobile (i.e. can you get your fingers round it) or is it fixed to the undrelying tissue? If it's mobile it's more likely a cyst. A vet should be able to give a reasonable idea of whether it's a cyst, abcess or tumour without doing anything overly invasive.

It is not really mobile. Appointment at Vets has now been booked. even though we don't know what is wrong it still is upsetting us as he is our 1st bun.

Just to give you guys an update on Ron.

He took a turn for the worse this afternoon. He collapsed and was struggling to get up and when he did he was hopping drunkenly. We took him to the Vets this evening and it turned out it was a big tumour and with everything else that happened and his age (he was 9 year old) it was decided he should be helped to Rainbow bridge.
