Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Neutering advice and sneezy/snorty bun

BettyLu

Alpha Buck
Hi all,

Couple of things I just need some advice with :)

Firstly, Patrick is humpy and honky all the time so I've booked him in to be neutered at beginning of May (simply because I can't afford it before then). I've never had to have any of my other buns done, so I just wondered if anyone could give me some basic before/after care advice and anything I should look out for specifically, I am a bit worried about it :(

Secondly, he has been sort of sneezing/snorting a bit lately, there's no discharge from his nose or on his paws or anything, is this a kind of hormonal related thing or should I be getting him to the vets before his op for a check up on this?
Any advice really appreciated, just wanna make sure I'm doing right by my little man!!

i would get the sneezing checked to be on the safe side. The vet should be able to listen to his chest. My HOney went for her spay and had a condition nicknamed snuffles. The vet was specialised with rabbits and when putting her under GA used a sytem to help her breath properly.

boys are usually fine the day after their op. its much less intrusive! if not already i would possibly bring him in for 1 or 2 nights. make sure he cant jump on anythign for about a week. dont use woodchip/sawdust as it will irritate the wound. make sure the hay is kep in one area so he can get off it if it becomes itchy.

Get loads of fresh herbs and food to temp him to eat when he gets home. and use a water bowl instead of bottle as its easier to get too when they are in a bit of pain(although he would hav had meds anyway)

Thanks for your reply. He's a house bun anyway but all advice noted. :)

I don't think it is snuffles as he doesn't have a runny nose or anything, I will take him off shavings and use Carefresh or something and see if that makes a difference, :) I guess it could be a the dust maybe?

Definitely stop using shavings if he is sneezing. My Poppy sneezes and has scarring on her lungs because I used to keep her on shavings :( She has to have medication occasionally when it flares up pretty bad, just need to keep on top of hoovering and things. Haven't used shavings since. I use lino, carpet squares and blankets instead. I moved the hamsters onto megazorb too as my last syrian got some stuck in her eye.

You could use Fitch if you need something like that. It's basically carefresh only at a good price, you get a huge bale for £15. I just use newspaper in the litter trays then fill with hay, with Poppy I use megazorb in her litter tray which is then filled with hay.

Keep hay raised and off the floor for a few days. Instead of litter in a litter tray you could use a towel so you can see exactly what is coming out. Both of my boys acted as if nothing had happened and were lying all over the place in awkward positions! So much easier than spays.

my frosty sometimes sneezes and snorts but no discharge. glad you asked this question. hope your bunster is ok

i hear him about 3 or 4 times MOST days. just seen my new lop eared male does it too... not as often as Frosty.
