Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bloat or blockage - vibes and advice needed please

Young Bun
Hi everyone,

It's exactly a year to the day that I lost my Pixie bunny to E.c and I've just left my wee Nethie Eva in critical condition at the vets. She wasn't eating yesterday evening so I began stasis treatment (meloxicam, metoclopramide, ranitidine, critical care). Still wasn't eating in the early am and became very bloated with hard tummy. No rabbit savvy vet available so I kept her warm through the night and brought her to rabbit specialist first thing.

Vet is very concerned. She's on IV fluids, pain meds and getting x-ray to determine cause of tummy distension. She'd been shedding, so I fear a fur blockage. Vet will call later with an update.

If anyone can offer any advice or happy stories about buns who got through this I'd appreciate it. I can't believe that exactly a year later I'm on the brink of losing another bun. Distraught :(

Oh, poor you! I'm afraid I don't have any advice to add but wanted to send vibes for Eva. Hang on, sweetie.

I don't have any advice but just lots of vibes and hugs. I hope your little one pulls through.

Really hope wee Eva comes through this OK. :( Honey has been given something called cisapride for gas before if your vet has this maybe it'll help.

It sounds like she is getting the right treatment.

Some people have used infacol or gripe water on here for bloat so worth mentioning to your vet. The x-ray should tell you what you are dealing with.

If it is a blockage she is on fluids which will hopefully help to get things moving, in worst cases they will operate and I have read a few success stories on here. It is a risky operation but can be successful.

Sending her lots of vibes for a full recovery x

Have they done a blood glucose test? That is really valuable in terms of identifying obstruction and whether surgery is needed. Fluids will help.

My Bubbles had a surgery for an obstruction 2 years ago. Touch wood but he has hadn't even had stasis since, so a happy ending is possible. (he has had an unrelated problem but that is beside the point).

I hope you get your positive outcome x

Such rotten luck. I hope she feels better soon and yhat you hear the lovely crunching munching sound of her nomming again really soon xx
