  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

To neuter or not??

What is the best age to neuter.

Kovu is a gorgeous orange butterfly mini lop. Hes 15 months old and His temperament is just lovely!
I've heard that bucks often get nasty before they are neutered?
He's not showing any signs of that whatsoever... Would it still be recommended to neuter him?
I'd quite like to breed him once before i did. But I'm afraid I wouldn't have time to ATM.

Are there any health advantages or disadvantages to neutering?

Thanks

Chels

Due to the extremely high number of rabbits desperate for a home, breeding generally isn't advised on here as it is a pro-rescue forum.

Does your male spray? that is the main thing un-neutered males do, as well as possibly a LOT of chinning, chasing, humping and nipping feet!

They can be neutered as soon as their testicles drop, around 16wks, and due to the risk (not particularly high but still a risk!) of testicular cancer I would still get him done asap, plus he can get a wife bunny when neutered :D

Make sure you find a rabbit savvy vet, I have PMed you by the way

I use Damson House Vets in Solihull http://www.solihullvet.co.uk/

There is another good vets in Birmingham but cannot remember the name sorry!

I think there is a list somewhere on this forum with recommended vets.

It makes all the difference, after having health issues with my Leo and the vet suggesting he be put down I sought out the vets I am using now who have made him better and had no intention of putting him down!

We use Manor Vets in Edgbaston, thanks to a recommendation from this forum. Marie Kubiak is the rabbit specialist there and she's great.
