  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bladder infection

Yesterday morning I noticed a change in Alfie he went from being alright to just laying in his liter and not eating. He was straining a lot to wee but hardly anything came out. I took him to the vets yesterday afternoon, they gave him a jab of antibiotics and some Metacam for me to give him once a day. His still pretty much the same this morning drinking but not eating so I'm syringe feeding him. I'm so worried about him, is there anymore I can do for him? I'm so scared I'm gunna lose him as we only lost his mate in January

He needs to go back to the Vet. If his bladder is now very full and he is still straining this is an emergency situation

He will need a full course of antibiotics, not just a 'one off' injection

He may need medication to keep his gastrointestinal tract working, pain from anywhere can cause the Rabbit to go into GI stasis

He may need stronger pain relief too

So my advice is to get him back to the Vet this morning

Good luck

Taking him to the vets ASAP. I haven't seem him straining but he hasn't been to the loo either. Do you think I should get them to x-ray him to? I'm so worried

The Vet should be able to feel if his bladder is very full

An xray might be useful to see if he has a lot of 'bladder sludge' or bladder stones.

If he has a lot of sludge he may need catheterisation and bladder stones would require surgery (cystostomy). But it may not be either condition and 'just' a bacterial infection. These often require a long course of antibiotic treatment as the infection can be seated deep within the bladder wall.

Sending vibes xx
