  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Liver disease?!?

Hi all,my bunny Milly has had bloods taken at the vet as she has lost some weight the last few days and has also been drinking more. Her liver is enlarged and the vet said it could be liver disease, response to an infection or EC.Ihave had experience with EC but dont know any thing about liver disease.Does that phrase cover more than one illness?Shes recently had a mild ear infection caught from her husbun-treated successfully but her white blood cells are very high as is her blood sugar so diabetes is also being investigated.Im very worried.we are only just getting over the ear infection and just before that her husbun had EC so it feels like an uphill struggle at the mo.Im so careful to keep their shed and run clean and they have a varied, healthy diet.
Are liver disease or diabetes difficult to manage?

Diabetes is extremely rare in Rabbits and it cannot be diagnosed by just one blood test, several samples need to be taken at specific times in a 24 hour period. Rabbit blood glucose levels can be elevated due to stress-ie due to being at the Vets !!

An enlarged Liver can occur for a variety of reasons, the specific liver enzyme levels need to be evaluated to try to find out the precise liver problems involved. Sometimes the Liver can 'recover'. More diagnostics would be needed to obtain a definitive diagnosis- eg an Ultra-sound and possibly a Liver Biopsy

I would try not to panic too much just yet and wait for your Vet to carry out more investigations.

Sending vibes for Milly xx

Thankyou for your reply Jane,i feel more reassured about her.I forgot to say shes drinking more water too.The vet is going to do more investigations so hopefully we will get to the bottom of this. Thanks again for your advice.
