Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My beautiful Timmy - UPDATE 21.3.13

suzibunbun

Mama Doe
Been back to the vet today, was also there Saturday and last Monday then the week before. Timmy now has a 'pocket' of pus around his only tooth far back at the top - he is on abx and painkiller Loxicom. Vet says he needs another dental tomorrow and the infection clearing - he has been sneezing green 'snotty' stuff which vet says is the pus from his infection - poor Timmy - he is still eating and drinking though but shakes and quivers most of the time and puts his head right back. I asked about xrays and they were a bit dismissive saying it is hard to see anything with a rabbit??????????:shock:
Any more advice??

Is there a specialist you can see nearby?
In their defense regarding the x-ray, our vet said to wait and let Francis harcourt Brown do them as the plates they have at our surgery were not designed for smaller animals and if we had FHB do them they would be clearer.
What are they planning to do dental wise? He sounds very poorly I'm not sure I'd risk a GA and I think I might prefer to go with intensive antibiotic treatment if the main issue right now is the infection affecting his breathing. Are they intending to clear this surgically?
I have a dental rabbit but I'm no expert on very sick rabbits.
Hopefully someone with experience will be along soon.

Gosh that's a worry about the GA! They are going to burr down the back tooth after clearing the pus from the gum pocket as far as I gathered also flush out the nasal gunge via his eye????. As I say he has not stopped eating etc but I do feel sorry for the little lad as he seems to be struggling with it all :cry::cry:

If it helps we have never lost a bunny under GA for a dental and we have had some very elderly and sick ones go through repeated dentals.

Personally I think it would be best to do as the vet suggests while he is still eating and there fore relatively strong. but I would also be wanting xrays at the same time to see how far infection had actually spread

Hugo's There has much more experience of sick buns than me so her advice trumps mine :thumb:

:( I was hoping you would get some better answers today Sue. I would certainly be asking for x-rays to establish if they can see any "pus" anywhere else and the extent of any potential root damage. Don't know if abcesses show up on x-rays. Barb may be able to enlighten you more as she has some experience in this area with regard to abcesses (what about taking him to her vet in Liverpool for a 2nd opinion, he seems very knowledgable?)

As Liz has said, he is still strong as he is eating so you don't want to leave it for him to have a GA.

Sending him lots of vibes.

My vet only works with rabbits and is a bunny dental specialist and I know he would take x-rays, and all his equipment is geared up for small animals. I think a more specialised vet is the way forward, and wouldn't it be better to loose that tooth. I know Simon would remove it, because he believes that if you leave it in, it is still a potential site for further infection. While he is eating and pretty good, I think now is the time to go for it, and sort it once and for all so to speak. You definately don't want to wait and put him through a GA if he starts to go downhill. Maybe you should discuss with your vet why they are not proposing to remove it, and also I would want to make sure that they will be securing his airway during the GA. Many, many vets don't because they simply don't know how too, but it is vital to reduce the risks, and there are far more options available if there is a blip during the surgery, if the airway is already secure, as the time it would take to then intubate a bunny would probably mean you had lost the opportunity to get him back successfully.

Huge dilemma about vet advice - but I will take Timmy first thing for his appointment as planned - if his dental issue does not improve after this or I feel he is not getting better I will be taking him to Rose Cottage in Runcorn to see Ken. My little lad MUST have the best treatment!!! Bless him - x

Good idea, but maybe sooner rather than later while he is still good.

Good luck for tomorrow. Definitely ask about the x-rays Sue. At least if he needs a 2nd opinion these can be shared without the need of having him put under another GA to have them taken.

Hopefully they will be able to sort him tomorrow.

Good luck to Timmy.

Has anyone mentioned Molly Varga to you? Barb has seen her before and she is very highly thought of. She does lots of webinars and specialises in rabbits. She is based in Cheshire so just another option for you if needed.

If people can have dental x-rays I don't see why the same information can't be seen on a bunny dental x-ray with a trained eye. :? I hope all goes well, poor Timmy

Yes I have heard of Molly Varga and seen her webinars - in fact I have a response from her on my FB page about Timmy when I asked a question recently during one of her sessions.

Timmy is lively this morning - he has had his abx and painkiller with a piece of banana and his pellets - Sweetpea is 'nagging' him for attention, bless her - hope she's okay today without him.

Will be taking my little fluffie lad in about 20 minutes - please wish him well today :cry:

An abcess is definitely visible on x ray, but it probably comes down to whether they are set up to x ray exotics again.

I would definitely suggest a specialist as they will get a better view of what is going on. I'm in no way an expert but Charlie has similar issues and had the offending teeth removed and the site cleaned surgically. They are also cleaning out what they can during a standard consult every few days (but Charlie is generally veryy calm)

Hope today goes well x

How did it all go?

Doughnut had had x-rays and I know you can't see what is going on with the teeth totally unless you have an x-ray. I hope he's OK but like you say I would take him elsewhere if you're not happy.

I know rabbits are lost under GA but Doughnut did have 3 GA's in a week. That's at a specialists and he just gives the minimum amount. I know this because I wanted to make sure that I wouldn't lose her. I now don't worry about GA's when she's with him.

Agree with this. I have never had any issue with xrays being taken at my vets and they are not specialists. In fact when we have contacted specialists they have always asked for xrays etc to be taken at our own vet first so they know what they are dealing with before a referral
