  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I just saw Pippin drink her own wee...

ewww bunnies gross.
I have seen Freddie and Biscuit lick another buns wee, but not their own.
I assumed it was like a dog licking another dog's wee, for the scent or something.
Idk man, blehh.

I've seen Smudge licking a small puddle on the floor. Nutmeg's the one who leaves the occasional puddle. I assumed he was tidying up her scent marking  he is a very tidy bunny.

It can be a behavioural issue, but sometimes it can be indicative of a health problem. So if it is a new behaviour and it is ongoing I would consult a Vet to err on the side of caution.

Sometimes Rabbits with renal or Dental problems will lick their own urine

I meant to say this actually, I've only seen Smudge do it the once, if I see him do it again I will be on to the vets about it.

Ginger does it when she is feeling rough, normally when her kidneys are hurting/playing up.

She also eats her own faecal poops (not caecals) when she feels bad.
