  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Stasis? Bloat? Pain?

I gave thumper his evening pellets about an hour ago. Ate the lot as usual. Then started changing position rapidly, clearly can't get comfortable, even rolled over. Knew he wasn't behaving normally. Offered two types of pellet, carrot, water, water with added pro-c probiotic (usually loves the taste and will drink the whole bowl ASAP), raspberry leaves, plantain, cucumber. Won't touch anything. Poos have been a normal size, done lots this evening. Did three poops on his shelf as he was trying to get comfortable. Now gone to hide behind the sofa. I know he's not right, what should I do?x

Could be gas in his tummy. Have you got Infacol? I always keep this in for when this happens. He'll be better in about 10 mins then. Give him a cuddle and massage his tummy that will help as well.

I think gripe water is very similar though wait for someone else to confirm that.

Gripe water is the same sort of thing, it's dill based for colic in babies. Thanks for the advice, luckily a medley of veggies soaked in water and gripe water has worked. Taking a while to eat it and laying down after a few bites but think it's gas pain. Will keep an eye on him overnight x

Oh that's good news. There is a fab video on You Tube that shows you how to do a proper bunny tummy massage.

Oooohhh thanks, will look that up. Mine are rubbish at being handled and will only tolerate a tummy rub for a few seconds before worming themselves away! Thumper has now had a run around and eating fresh hay. I've put a new litter tray out so I can check his output is good overnight x
