  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

How far away is your vets?

I have been taking Buster to our local vet (5 minutes drive away) for the past few months. It is only now he's been referred to an exotics specialist I realise just how good they are. Only thing is they are a 30 minute drive away. However, after a very thorough examination and an array of tests done quickly and competently, I want to take my buns there if any future problems arise. The new vet has finally taken my concerns about EC seriously and has noticed things about Buster's teeth and eyes that my original vet didn't even mention. They even took my very highly strung boy's blood without an anaesthetic.

Would you go to the specialist in future or your closer vet? I'm pretty upset that if it wasn't for my own personal research and the help of this website, Buster wouldn't have had Panacur in December and he may have developed all sorts of neurological problems or even died by now. He's already got the beginnings of cataract formation now, aged 10 months. I personally don't think a 30 minute drive is long for the sake of getting an expert opinion. Obviously this particular issue will be managed by the specialist, but if Thumper were to become ill, I think I'd want him to go there. What would you do?x

According to the AA route planner the vet school is 38 miles away from me and a 46min drive. It doesn't factor in Edinburgh rush hour traffic.

Id rather be going to someone who i knew would know what they were doing. My vet is about 15 minute drive away.

I don't use my local vet as they're rubbish. They're about 2 mins walk away.

So, we use one that's much further away. It's a massive 7 minute walk away, or 5 minute drive.

My current vet is less than 10 mins away. But with my first buns, when I was in Bristol I went to a vet in Gloucestershire and that was about an hour away I think? It's been a few years since I had to do it  but it was well worth the journey to see someone we really trusted

2 hours on 2 busses.
When I go to the vets it's an all day even. I can't wait until I have a car, then it's a 40 minute drive!

My normal vet is 5 mins away and the exotic specialist is 20mins or 30 in rush hour. It was a pain today when I had sn emrrgency and didnt have transport but you want someone good who understands EC

I have a vet two mins up the road but I wouldn't go to them for love nor money. It's not I've heard bad things but they are so small I doubt they ever see anything other than dogs and cats.

The vet we use is a 20-30 min drive depending on the traffic. It's all motorway so is a smooth journey for them.

My vet has two branches, the branch nearest me is literally 2 mins drive, or probably about just over a ten minute walk if you're me.
The other branch where they do all the bunny op's is a 15 min drive, but can sometimes make it in just over 10 :)

The ER vet is probably ten minutes away or so, but they're very nice and I love the work they do. I'd rather go somewhere further out of my way, then risk a closer vet doing something that could harm my rabbits.

Literally the end of road. 2 minish walk. We have 2 vet surgeries in the group. The other is 20 min drive in the country side.

Thanks all for your contributions. I would be happy to go to the local vet for routine vaccinations or pick up any meds I need but I think that's it now. Just wondering whether to bother even doing that? Might be easier for all their records to be in one place. It seems half an hour isn't too far to travel, it's mostly motorway driving so pretty smooth overall x

I go to my proper vet for everything. I did consider using a closer vet for vaccinations but if the rabbit isn't healthy then the immunity is reduced so I like them to have a thorough health check first by a vet who knows what hes doing.

My usual vet is about 30-40 mins away by car. FHB (rabbit specialist) is about an hour by car (MUCH longer in rush hour). Out of hours / emergency vet is about 15-20 mins.
I have other vets that I could walk to in 10 mins or so, but have never used them. If I lived closer to Harrogate, I would be tempted to swap to FHB for everything as they do everything I need and are open every day at some point.

At the end of the road, approx. 400 metres. They have a small animal vet there who has rabbits of her own.

about 45mins. but occasionally it takes 30mins, but usually 45.

costs a fortune though because we have to get a taxi - £50 a time, including waiting time. this is a deal aswell because we have the same taxi driver.

The vet that my bunnies and cats go to is 30 mins drive.

For my chinchillas I go to a specialist in Leeds, so it's a 75 minute drive for me.
