  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Giardia?

The kids I look after and I *may* have picked up Giardia when we were in Bali  We're all having symptoms and are getting tested tommorrow.

Just had a brief look on google and apparently rabbits can get it  Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with this?

All my buns seem fine at the moment, I'm just worried because Max shared an apple with me this morning :(

Im so sorry that you may have Giardia. Both my dogs have had this nasty parasite and as you know it causes explosive watery diahorrea which sometimes I didnt see so couldnt clear up when it happened in the garden. My buns are free range and they have never caught it so please dont worry to much.

I had it in India - untreated for nearly a year and was very poorly with it. Yes, it is a notifiable infectious disease BUT as long as you follow good hand hygiene your rabs will be fine. I brought it back to the UK and my family home at the time and managed not to infect my parents and sisters! ;) You just need to wash your hands carefully after using the loo and thoroughly before handing your rabbits food, that is all. Chin up chook - it only takes 3 doses of ciproxin and it will be gone from your system. x

Thanks guys
I'm actually not too bad, the poor kids are really sick though :(
We're going to the doctors this morning, lets hope it's not Giardia. One of the other people who was with us in Bali got it though so it was definitely around

Do you think it would present with diarrhea in the buns too?

It is very very rare for a rabbit to get Giardia. If your rabbits did contact the intestinal parasite it could cause diahorrea. My dogs have been treated with panacur and metronidazole.Ive read, but never tried it,that grapefruit extract can also treat it.
