Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is Murphy on correct meds?

I have posted re vibes on general chat, but does anybody know correct meds for bunny with jaw abscess. He has been given oral metacam and baytril, and a gut stimulant. Should he be having penicillin type injection?? Got no experiance with abscesses, have read few articles but not sure about long term care etc.

I've just posted on your general thread but my understanding (limited because Im new to this too) is that the right antibiotic will depend on what the infection is. Baytril didn't do anything for Charlie (but not a lot will) and we switched to septrin before the access developed and then penicillin (duprofen i think) after surgery on the abcess. My vet said that would cover most infections and is generally effective. Now we have bacteriology results back, we've changed again...

Metacam is definitely important, and zantac or similar until he os eating again. Charlie also had some kind of opiate for the first 48 hours post op. I don't think it helped with his eating but it really chilled him out !

Thats helpful, I will ask about possibilty of trying another antibiotic, think my vets are quite good, but you are never 100% sure if they are doing the correct thing.

I know... I trust my vets completely bit still feel inclined to check! The other idea I'm trying with Charlie was echinacea. I don't know what the evidence base is for rabbits but my vet was enthusiastic.

Doughnut is currently on echinecea and levimsole. She's had it for three weeks 1ml every day which is a lot. My specialist gave it to her as she has been ill for so long and is still on metacam and just finished nystatin. It builds up the immune system, she is also having a pinch of probiotic. He's very good so echinecea obviously works.

With antibiotics I guess different ones work for different things and different rabbits. Doughnut has had bayril, septrin and the last one she's had is veraflox. If one doesn't work there is always another one to try!

How and how much are you giving? In what form? My vet suggested about half what I would take so I'm crushing half tablets and rushing it up with banana but I'm open to suggestions!

And stupid question- what is levimsole?

Sorry for the 101...

Baytril, although a good antibiotics for many things, is not good at penetrating pus so is often not the first choice for abscesses. There are other antibiotics that can be used on abscesses. We tend to use ceporex which is administered by injection daily

Sorry just looked at the label it's levamisole. It's in liquid form echinecea and levamisole together. I got it from the specialist. She gets a whole syringe full. I think levamisole also helps the immune system. I just put it on a bit of weetabix in the morning for her with her metacam. She didn't like the taste initially but now eats licks the bowl.

Maybe your vets could order it in? Because I got it directly from him I'm not sure where you could get it. I've got another two weeks worth I think then going back to him.

I'm guessing veraflox is good for infections as that's what Doughnut had, don't think she had pus though as hers was internally. When I call my normal vets to get hold of some as was running out they didn't stock it, so I guess specialists use different stuff as they also didn't stock nystatin. They do more general stuff like baytril, metacam etc.

Thank you... seeing my vet on Tuesday for a good clean... I'll ask about it then

You're welcome. I seem to be an expert on rabbit medicine now unfortunately. Maybe give a pinch of probiotic as well. Doughnut laps it up and it's good if your rabbit is on antibiotics, it will help keep the gut flora balanced.
