Help removing matts on cheeks?

Have just collected a rescue who has solid matts all over his face. He has let me cut a few off but any tips on helping me remove the rest as non traumatically as possible? Xxx
 
A vet might be able to shave them - which would be quick but a little traumatic. Otherwise just take it a little at a time, there isn't much you can do with matts to get them off easier.
