  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

how to give medication

Jenny Jump

Warren Scout
Jenny is doing well since her painful back condition was diagnosed and daily medication prescribed. She seems to like the taste of Metacam and I wondered if it could be put on food. Nothing in her diet (hay, pellets and veg) is a suitable vehicle for the syrup. I don't mind giving it to her in a syringe, but I want to make it as easy as possible to give her meds to her for when other people care for her.

Will she suck on the end of the syringe and take it like that? My buns love metacam so that's the easiest way for me to make sure they get the full dose. One of my rabbits didn't quite grasp the concept at first so I trained her how to do it first with syringes of diluted carrot juice. They love metacam, once the syringe is empty they get annoyed and try to snatch it out of my hand

Alternatively, you could put it on some sort of food. I squirt Barney's daily gut stimulant straight onto his pellets. The only problem with this is that sometimes they don't get the full dose as it gets on the bowl. So for important medicines I usually use Critical Care, as he will lick the bowl clean when fed this. Or I dilute the medicine with carrot or pineapple juice (no added nasties or added sugar) and syringe feed it.

Though if you can get them to take it willingly from a syringe, that is the easiest way.

Jenny grabs the syringe too. I have had to open a new one today because of what she did when my husband dosed her. That's why I wondered if there was an easier way. I am worried how she might be if I go away.

A small bit of weetabix. Doughnut has all three medicines like this. She thinks it's a treat and it soaks it up great and no stress.

Thanks, I think I might steal that idea for future medications.. great idea:thumb:

We use mini shredded wheat because they are 100% wheat which is a major component of excel nuggets which they eat regularly.
