Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

new bun: clear sticky discharge from eye AND scabs on back

Mama Doe
SCABS: Over the last week I have found scabs on the bunny I brought from the rescue section at P@H last Saturday, she was there as no-one had wanted to adopt her (I'm so lucky to be the one to have her!). I have another rabbit who has not been in physical contact with her as she's only 12 weeks (different cages); and have been watching her like a hawk when I have let her out - I therefore am sure this problem has not occurred since I've had her, which makes sense as the scabs look as though they're healing. I have found 2-3 small scabs and 1 slightly larger one. My dad and I believe the cause is from other buns, although we obviously couldn't say for sure - she was hiding in her cage (which had other rabbits, and beforehand she had been with around 5-8 rabbits in the main adoption area) when I got her so perhaps she was being bullied?
EYE-DISCHARGE: Her right eye seems to have a watery-crust around it. It is clear, but the eye itself is different from the left eye - pinker, and has thinner hair around it.
She's still active, inquisitive and enjoying cuddles, and eating and pooping normally from what I've seen so far - but I'm anxious. The scabs and eye-discharge is really worrying me.
Tomorrow I'm taking her to the vet, in the meantime any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds as though she has conjunctivitis and that the scabs may be healing bite wounds which may or may not be infected, Bite wounds are at high risk of abscessating.

Hopefully the Vet can help xx

I agree with Jayne.

But I would also take her back to the Vets at PAH, as I would expect some kind of discount/waiver on any costs for treatment.

Thanks to both of you; the appointment is now booked for Mon at P@H vet services, free of charge. Hopefully they'll be able to help, in the meantime I'll look into rabbit conjunctivitis. xxx

Could they not see her before Monday ? If the eye is infected there is a big risk of more serious problems developing if prompt antibiotic treatment is not given.

I agree about the scabs - definitely sounds like old bite wounds from previously being bullied by another rabbit. If you can't see anyone before Monday - you should gently clean the eye area with warm water and cotton wool - looks like your new bunny will be safe and loved from now on - well done :D
