  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Fungal hepatitis - anyone got any experience/info?

Alpha Buck
I was wondering if anyone can tell me anything about fungal hepatitis in rabbits?
After loosing weight rapidly Bambam was x-rayed, scanned, had blood tests, and biopsies of liver, gall-bladder and bone marrow (due to having virtually no white blood cells). The culmination is he has fungal hepatitis. We are waiting for sensitivities to find out the best course of treatment. The bone marrow biopsy didn't come up with anything but this may not mean anything as the vet was unsure whether the sample was big enough to test.
The question is whether his suppressed immune system led to the hepatitis or the other was round.
The plan is to treat the hepatitis and hope his immune system bounces back . . . .:?i
If not I'm not sure where we can go from there.
Thanks

No experience of this myself but I believe that it can be due to a compromised immune system. People with HIV can get it. So it is a symptom as opposed to a primary disease process I think.

Could Hepatic Coccidiosis be involved ?

Thanks Jane. We are still waiting for some results which will hopefully answer that one.
I guess I was hoping someone had had experience of this with positive outcome:?
Will have to be patient
