Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

spondylosis

Jenny Jump

Warren Scout
Jenny has been unwell this week. An x-ray showed spongylosis (fusing of the spine). Vet thinks she may have experienced a flair up of pain. Medications have transformed her, she is as bright as a button today, following us about and eating with gusto. Obviously though, this is a chronic and progressive condition. Does anyone have experience of caring for a rabbit with this problem?

Do you mean spondylosis?

From my understanding it is excruciatingly painful, so a good pain killer daily should help an awful lot :)

Yes, spelling is not my strong point. We are back to see the vet next week when I hope I will get more information. Just wondered if anyone had experience of buns with this. On meds she is like a different bun. Poor little thing.

We had a rabbit with it. She was on daily pain relief for the rest of her life. eventually she did deteriorate quite badly with hind leg weakness and falling over. We lost her to liver cancer in the end so don't know how bad it would have ended up getting for her :(

hopefully the pain relief will give your bunny lots of extra happy times x

Not a bunny but my Uncle has it and even with strong pain killers he says that the pain is pretty much constant :( not excruciating manageable but that's a human who can express pain with words. :?

I know Jenny will get the best care and meds possible, good luck hope she feels better with the pain relief :)

It's so hard to know with rabbit's; just how painful is it? And so much has changed in Jenny's life this year, making it hard to judge by behaviour. It wasn't till she stopped eating that we knew she was ill. We thought she was subdued because of the trauma, but she must have been in pain too. She has been so lively today with the meds clearly doing their job.

Again not a rabbit but one of my cats has severe spondylosis. Recently she's been having acupuncture (western trigger point rather than traditional chinese) and it has made an astonishing difference. After 5 weekly sessions she now has full range of movement without any discomfort and we are starting to reduce her painkillers - so far down from 3.5kg dose daily to 2kg dose daily without any signs of discomfort. I have always been a complete sceptic but now I'm totally sold!
