  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

*Picture* Please help RU - Vets say there's nothing else they can do to help Alice :(

HoneyBear

She has sore hocks, apparently the worst the vet has seen.
Vet had said stop the cream as its not helping, carry on with the pain relief/anti inflammatorys, and bacically just hope for the best but there also concerned about her getting osteomyelitis

That sounds so painful.
Have you considered a consultation with a vet specialising in rabbits to see if you can get more help?

Poppy and Leo's clear up because of their blankets but I remember seeing a few pictures of Jack's-Jane having to wrap Lady Lydia's feets up because they were bad, I don't know if that would help? or is possible? with the cream wrapped under? Can you see another vet for a second opinion?

I don't know :( poor Alice :( xx

I see you are in Hampshire, have you thought of paying a visit to a rabbit specialist, John Chitty is in Hampshire and he is very good

There are things that can be done, I had the same problem with my Lily-Hope and we cleared them up

Thank you.
I have booked her in on Saturday to see a vet called Pablo Fuentes who is apparently the vet to see local to me, but will definatly keep John Chitty in mind, where in Hampshire is he based?

Exactly who I was thinking off .... but just have this feeling I recommended him to HoneyBear on another occasion.

JC is based at Anton Vets, Andover - although I believe he also consults in Basingstoke and Southampton (you'd need to ring to confirm this).

Can you post a photo of the hocks, I have quite a bit of experience in dealing with them in some of my Rexes

This is Lydia's hocks when they were at their worst a couple of years ago

I've booked in with John Chitty but he's not available until 22nd
So going to keep my appointment on Saturday and probably see him as well!

Just for some info as I'm not sure if you know or not but osteomyelitis is an infection in the bone. People can get it and antibiotica are used in us humans so not necessary the end of the road, but I know people not animal cases so I can stand corrected.
My main tip would be to keep the feet clean and dry. I would clean with salty water and pat dry with some gauze, not cotton wool due to fibre loss. It could bide you extra time for keeping infection at bay. Good luck, she has great chances with you on board! Xx

Great, if she is a messy pooper you have to pull out the poops, they get into the pile and could dig into her sensitive feet. Xx

Can you post pics of her set up as well?
Angel suffers from sore hocks and I manage to keep on top of them pretty well.
I found the vet bed never really helped her, I'll get more pics of my set up to show you what has helped angel.
It's messy just now and needs a clean out!

Pictures would be great thank you!
They don't have "set ups" as such they jus free range and have a few litter trays and toys and tunnels dotted around. The litter trays are filled with newspaper, megazorb and hay and the flooring they are on is carpet but have put fleeces down on the floor in the main places they sit.
I was going to set up there crate again with the vetbed in tonight, see if that helped at all.
Other people have suggested foam mats but I struggle to get our other bunny not to eat them!

I live in Basingstoke and I'm pretty sure he's seen one of my rabbits before, might be thinking of someone else though :)
