Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spay information?

I know the basics and everything I really need to know but I just want to double check a few things as Pippin might be getting spayed sooner than I thought.

Do I need to restrict her to a small area?

Can I ask for staples or glue?

Will they let me bring pain relief home with me to administer myself? Do I need that?

Will they let me give them food/hay to give her after the op?

Thanks :)

It's been a while but...

1. Yes, I would, you don't want the wound to rip and she'd be a bit groggy initially anyway.
2. I think they usually use internal dissolvable sitches and then glue so that they can't get to the stitches.
3. They should do, I would want pain relief at home for one of mine.
4. Again, they should be happy to let you take some goodies in. Often after a GA the hardest thing is getting them eating so a selection of their favourites can help.

Thank you very much! :) How long would I keep her restricted?

I'd say yes to all of that too, please try to get pain relief for her especially. I can't imagine havi g abdominal surgery without pain relief so I think they need it too!

On restricting her I don't think she needs to be in a hospital cage as such, but if she is an outdoor single bun having her in overnight in a small pen/run/cage might be an idea as it will stop her running around and hurting herself and will keep her warm. A post op bun often has trouble staying warm. I wrapped Loki up in a blankie after his neuter!

It's one of those things that really its best to take it as it comes and see how she gets on.

I really will try then, yes exactly!

She'll be an indoor bun by the time she's having her spay so it'll be a big puppy pen set up. Shall I restrict her to like 3ft by 3ft? or smaller? or bigger? and for how long?

I'd definitely ask for her to be glued on the outside..my Chloe got her stitches out pretty much straight away. And after a trip to emergency vets, who stapled her, she got the staples out within the 20 minutes it took me to get her home

That sounds awful :( I definitely will then

Just to add, Cookie liked a little snuggle pad for a bit of warmth. They also suggest giving water in a bowl for them to lap as they might not be able to stretch to drink from a bottle. I kept her quiet for a couple of days in small pen and carrier in the kitchen and then she went back to her hutch with no problem.
