Bad news from the specialist

Hoppit!

Wise Old Thumper
So my vet FINALLY got round to referring Pickles to the specialist, only to be told there's nothing they can do anyway. He's got dodgy tooth roots on the right side and he's stopped eating hay and grass altogether, which means his poos are just a horrible sticky mess and he's in a real state all the time. The poor darling. I'm feeding him Protexin pellets (I don't know who it was who recommended them but they are helping a bit so thank you!) and fibreplex but I just don't know what else to do. Does anyone know of any other seriously high fibre pellets? I've heard that some wild plants, like bramble leaves, are good for squishy poos - does anyone have any experience with that? Also, (and I know this is probably a really silly question but I'm clutching at straws here) would a high-fibre human cereal, like bran flakes, help at all?

Any advice or suggestions would be really gratefully received.

I am sorry to hear about Pickles, tooth roots are just the worst

Oxbow pellets are the highest in fibre however I have never used them as they are out of my price range!

I'm feeding Pebs a mixture of high fibre science selective (25% fibre) and vetcare plus Digestive Health Formula (32% fibre) with the intention of increasing the vetcare plus and decreasing SS..However Pebbles isn't keen on the Vetcare plus and leaves them till he is desperate lol ( or Poppy eats them when I'm not looking!)

I'm not sure if what you have is higher in fibre, but I'd go for the highest fibre possible. Pebbles also used to refuse grass and hay, and it has taken nearly 3 years to get him munching grass and a bit of specific hay. Fortunately he doesn't have squishy poos..just very dark on the outside but crumbly inside (unlike Poppy's golden poos)

I'm not sure about bran flakes, as it may not be the same type or amount of fibre.

edited to say i just looked up fibreplex...I didn't realise it was a paste...I was confusing it with FibaFirst which is 30% Fibre feed

I'm pretty sure I've seen bran flakes discouraged on here. With Brock I used to chop up hay really small with nail scissors, and grass, and mix in into a kind of soup with softened pellets - protexin are good - and grated carrot (tiny amount), etc.

My big worry would be pain relief. Dental pain is really bad, and rabbits hide their pain well. Brock was very bright within himself but when the vet saw the state of his teeth under GA she insisted I let him go, as she could see that he must be in pain even though he was hiding it well. Sorry - I know that's not what you want to hear. :(

Shredded wheat should be ok as it is 100% whole wheat, no sugar. Poppy had a mucky bum at the rescue, they said they gave mini shredded wheat once a week, judst 1 piece. Xx

I'm sorry he's going through so much :( I know nothing about teeth, but I'll send vibes and a bunny cuddle for him x
