  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Worms - where do they come from and can I prevent them coming back?

ripminnie

Wise Old Thumper
Daisy or Digby or both of them has worms :( for the third time in 18 months. Previously I have treated them with panacur, which has got rid of them. But where do they come from?? Hay? Or something in the garden? :? Can I not stop the buns from getting them again?

I thought they came from the buns coming into contact with dog/cat/fox mess or grass that has the worm eggs on it... My Skye had worms a couple months ago after free ranging.. figured she must have come into contact with a bit of poop somewhere even though I checked the garden religiously

Pin/thread worm eggs are every where in the soil. Some buns seem to get them more than others.
Thumper never got worms in 6 years. Benjie had them on arrival & had panacure. Later we both discovered he can deworm himself before there are any signs at all with blackthorn leaves. He just jumps in the box of dry leaves every 5-6 months, has a munch for 3-4 days then doesn't bother again for another 5-6 months.

It is said that feeding a good sprig of thyme daily helps to prevent worms, but I just let Benjie do his own thing!
