Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

sneezing

Hi,

I went into my p@h at 5.30 and was stood watching the buns for a while with my 9 year old. A little female lop caught my eye as she was laid down sneezing occasionally. I stood an watched for abit longer and she continued to sneeze sporadically. Her pen had shavings and hay in it, along with 3 other lops.

I told the girl on the till that I was concerned as I believed that a sneezing bun may not be well. She said she would tell her manager. Unfortunately I was rushing off somewhere so couldnt hang around.

My plan was to go in again tomorrow and see if anythings been done. If she's still there, sneezing, I plan on finding someone on the shop floor.

Aside from the sneezing she "appeared" ok, I saw her moving around, drinking and there was no obvious wetness around nose/eyes etc. However I'm no vet, and she was a few feet away from me.

So....

What could be wrong?

If she's having treatment should she be taken off sale ( I feel yes) ?

I just want to be armed with my facts before going in there.

Pets at Home stock often develop respiratory tract problems. She should not have been on the shop floor. Selling an unhealthy Animal would be in breach of the terms of the shop' license. Whether the sneezing was due to infection or allergy it is still abnormal and warrants Veterinary attention.

You could discuss your concerns with the local council's Environmental Health Department. They are responsible for issuing licenses to enable Pet Shops to sell Livestock.

There is no point contacting the RSPCA, they will just tell you to inform the Council.
