  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Steroids

Sophie has been really sneezy again and hubby took her to the vets this morning, she saw a vet at the practice we haven't seen before - they gave her a dose of steroids for her allergies and want to put her under general anaesthetic to flush out her tear ducts etc.

My vets are normally so good, but when hub told me this I was pretty shocked - I've read rabbits should never be administered steroids as it can damage their liver. Please someone tell me I'm wrong!

My bunny is goin for her tear duct flushed in the morning but she's just having her eye numbed not GA my bunny was given Decopillin :)

I certainly would not be happy with the steroids. Rabbits are VERY sensitive to the adverse side effects of steroids, especially immuno-suppresion and GI tract ulceration

If the sneezing is due to a bacterial infection located in the naslacrimal ducts the steroids could make things much worse.

Thanks for the replies - is there any suggestion as to how I should proceed? Poor Sophie is still sneezing away, but we're reluctant to take her back?
