  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Change in behaviour

Hey everyone

As you have always provided me with such brilliant advice, I thought you could lend me a hand with my little problem I am having.

My 4.5 year old lop rabbit Woody doesn't seem to be quite right at the moment. He is eating - veggies, hay, pellets but seems to be acting differently.

He is usually always in his run, playing jumping etc however over the last couple of days he always seems to be inside his house, sleeping. This is very rare for him, this morning when I went outside to feed him, he was asleep. This has never happened before.

I have recently changed his diet (about a week ago) over to Excel pellets. He seems to find them very yummy and most enjoyable!

About two months ago he had bad dental problems - spurs on his teeth which had cut and infected his tongue

Does anybody have any idea why he is acting so quietly and differently?

Many thanks.

I would have him checked by a vet. Any change in behaviour is a cause for concern in my book, especially if they are more lethargic than usual.

It wouldn't hurt to have his teeth re-checked whilst you are there incase they are causing him some discomfort.

Definitely go to the vets if he is less active. Most bunnies go mad for their food, if Doughnut doesn't I know there is something wrong.

I took him to the vets and they said that again he has tooth spurs

They want to keep him in overnight to get it sorted and to check he recovers well from sedation.

I hated leaving him.

I think this will be a long-term problem now.

Sorry to hear that, but atleast he is having them sorted now thanks to his super observant mummy.

Woody is home! They didn't need to sedate him because they said he was so well behaved

They rasped down his back teeth and I have to take him back in 8 weeks.

Lots of cuddles now :D
