Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Advice please, uncomfortable bunny......

Well - now I'm confused

Holly was very definitly not well this morning - not eating, not drinking, not pooping - all things she normally does in abundance. And she was quite definitly in pain - trying all sorts of different positions to get comfortable etc. We felt her tummy - seemed normal but we are not vets so weren't going to trust our judgement.

Hubby whipped her off to the vets straight away - and the little tyke decided to improve when she got there and was hopping happily around the surgery. The vet did a thorough going over - and could find nothing wrong! No tenderness in her tummy, teeth are fine, temperature normal. Gave her some panacur and cleaned out a some wax from one of her ears.

She is back at home again - still not herself and seems very tired. So hopefully some quiet time and a rest will help.

Booking an appointment with our normal vet for later one just to get another opinion (the vet this morning was the out of hours vet somewhere else) - but until then poor hubby is at home on bunny watch...horrible job that is ! Luckily his work is very good that way :thumb:

Hope she is okay - and this is just a temporary thing that will quickly pass.

Mornign All,

I am jsut looking for advice on our little girl Holly.

The symptoms seem similar to that of Bunkin, but not bang on.

Last night we went to bed at about 10pm and she had been out for a run and was drinking and eating quite happliy.

This moring Fellie went in to give the buns breakfast, and she was really not her self.

She would not touch food, and was trying to get comfy, but could not flop or streach out.

Fearing stasis, I poped her in her carrier and went to the emergency vet at 6:30 this morning.

The vet gave a a full once over of feeling belly, teeth, temperature, eyes and ears.

She had a tiny clean of one ear which was a bit more than normal, but not much.

Vet watched her hop around the room, which she did quite happily. And could not find anything wrong.

She gave a worming drug, as a matter of course, but was at a loss to explain why she was off food.

Suggested maybe stomach cramps?

Now we are home she is tucked up in her litter box, not pooping or eating. Vet recommends a follow up this afternoon, to cover us if she does not make any progress.

Any ideas greatfuly received.

Thanks you all who read!!

Oh dear Felli,

look how we both turn to RU when befuddled by bunnies!

Feel free to look at my post too, now do some work!!

Hubby x

Hi

I think you need to see a more rabbit savvy vet. I would expect gut stimulant (Metacloperamide) and painkillers (Metacam) to be given for stasis in a bun with these symptoms.

Maybe try and get a second opinion off another vet as soon as poss?

Like minds, eh! ;) I've merged the two so that you can get some useful replies all in the same place.

I think you're doing the right thing in getting another opinion as, like gemmapookie said, some painkillers and gut stimulant (provided a blockage has been ruled out) is usually a good idea. Best of luck and I hope Holly feels better soon. x

Thanks KarenM and Gemmapookie,

Now sitting in the second vet surgery of the day.
It's a P@H, but the lead vet Steffan is very bunny savvy
And knows his stuff.

She may have had a poop or two this morning, but
I can't be sure I emptied her litter box thoroughly.

Now doing the expectant father pacing while nurse gives her
A preliminary once over.

Fingers and paws crossed!

Me&Bobo is now back at our normal vet - Holly will be seen by the chap we really trust - Me&Bobo rang to make the appointment and they said to bring her straight in. This vet sorted out Bobo when he had Stasis last year so hopefully - fingers crossed - he'll sort out Holly. Poor little girl - she so doesn't deserve this.:(

Holly Update

Well - our favourite vet has just seen her and can detect some tenderness in her lower abdominable region. So he's going to do x-rays etc to get to the bottom of it and find out what it all is...so she is in safe hands and it's just a matter of waiting now.

Still so very worried but at least she is with the professionals now and in good hands.

Why is it that one vet can pick something up and is prepared to go further to investigate - and another doesn't? We are prepared to pay anything for our babies to ensure their happiness so that's not an issue. Don't understand it really. :(

I know it's awful isn't it, you take your pet to the vet expecting the vet to know what the problem is and how to treat it. Unfortunately it's offen not that way with buns :(

I'm glad she's in safe hands now. Loads of vibes for a speedy recovery

Sending vibes for Holly. Spenser had something similar last year, and I can empathise with the difference in interest and knowledge shown by different vets.

Your symptoms do sound a bit similar to my bun the difference is that mine gets totally better within 24 hrs:roll: My new rabbit vet had a good plan of action for him now she has seen him and thoroughly examined him and watched him for 15 mins. She was adamant that he was not in great pain ( she explained how she could tell) but that he was uncomfortable. She did not want to give metacam as this in itself can slow the gut even more at that point as he had done some poo and wee earlier. She said max time I could leave him without eating was 18 hrs and that I must watch him see if he is actually eating hay or not in that time. If he did not improve by end of the day then it was straight back for medication etc.

He started eating hay when we got back from vets and was eating his food by early afternoon so this one lasted only about half a day max. The longest has been nearly a full day.

today he like a bunny on steriods!!! He is racing around and begging me for treats and food which is hard as I am reducing his pellets and fenugreek crunchies:(

Its a lovely sunny day here if a bit chilly!!

It's so annoying when things aren't picked up but you know yourself when they are unwell. I'm so pleased you have someone who knows what they are going. I would have recommended going to Mark in Maidstone otherwise since you're in Kent as he's been the answer to all my prayers and saved Doughnut's life.

I'm like you, I'm past caring about money. Spent over £1,000 on Doughnut this time and probably more but think she is worth it. At the other specialist I insisted on tests and keeping her in for observations and they said she was fine after two days, and were totally wrong. I think if you have to insist then it's better to go to another vet who recognises your rabbit is ill, even if they are unsure what it is! Mark could tell just by looking at Doughnut's eyes that she was unwell, even though she was active when she saw him. They all seem to pick up when they get to the vets to make us look silly.

Did your rabbit have gas? I cut down Doughnut's pellets to an egg cup when she had an episode of gas and that's what I've kept her on now, although she is not allowed that many at the moment. It's difficult when they seem better but you have to restrict their treats, I feel mean with the non-stop begging. Found out she absolutely loves celery so maybe you could give a little bit of that or herbs as a treat instead of pellets.

I was thinking about Mark this morning actually - if our normal vet sent her away saying she was okay I would definity have been on the phone to him...but keeping him in mind for future! :thumb:

Yes it's always good to know someone you can trust.

When Doughnut is better I will just go to my normal vets for vaccinations but if I am worried I'll go straight to him. He doesn't work at weekends but I think the other specialist Richard is also suppose to be good.

Keep us posted, I hope it's nothing serious.

I had added celery to his diet a few days before latest episode- have no idea if that is the cause but am just sticking to herbs only at the moment. I have tried so many things in the past to try and find trigger to no avail. aFter his last episosde I stopped all kale cabbage carrot and he was only on herbs and celery but he still had another do ????

Is there any more news on Holly? I hope the x-rays can shed some light on what's going on. xx

Me&bobo is calling vet at 4pm - which is when they said to call. So really REALLY hoping that so far no news is good news. Just want her home, safe and sound :(

Update

Well - apparently she has impacted fecal matter and gas in her lower bowels. Still not eating but has perked up abit. Collecting her in a couple of hours, see how she does over night then take her back tomorrow if neccessary. Vets have been giving her fluids through a drip and assume will be medicated for pain to last through the night (will check this).

Sort of close to tears now - but that's just being tired and worried I guess :(

Just don't know what has caused this either - nothing that we feed her should, unless she has somehow eaten something we haven't noticed. Beginning to wonder if this has been a problem in the past with her - and that was why she was abandoned.
