  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Molly eating only greens after spay.

We had Molly spayed on Friday morning. She really didn't eat anything much at all until yesterday afternoon when she started eating parsley, coriander and cabbage leaf. She has eaten more of that this morning which we are pleased about but she still hasn't really shown much of an interest in her regular food or hay. As pleased as I am that she is finally eating, I'm eager to see her diet return to normal as soon as possible. Are we spoiling her by giving her the green stuff? Should we stop and just give regular food and hay? Don't want her to stop eating again but don't want her to end up with diarrhea and a new set of problems. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is she on pain meds?
Id let her eat whatever she feels like personally as its very important that they eat, as little as 8 hrs without eating can be fatal.
She will peek up soon , in the meantime tempt her with all her fav food, and try scattering some dill or thyme in with some hay to encourage her to eat the hay as well.

She was given pain relief immediately after the op but nothing since. The vet that carried out the procedure insisted she wouldn't need any after that. It was very much a case of "there you go, that will be £110 please". The vet was closed over the weekend so we took her to a different vet on Saturday afternoon who gave her a gut stimulant but no painkiller as she couldn't contact the vet that did the spay to find when and how much she'd been given the previous day. The vet we saw Saturday also said there was no obvious sign that she was in any pain. The wound is healing, no sign of infection, she hasn't pulled at the stitches or anything. I have noticed an occasional teeth grinding. We feel terribly guilty about our choice of vet for the procedure, not very impressed with the lack of advice or after care. The vet was recommended to us though and we thought we were doing the right thing. We will continue to monitor her and let her eat as she wishes. We will also try mixing in some other nice things with her hay to tempt her.

Aww bless her when my 2 girls were spayed I was given pain relief for them when I brought them home if ya bunny is in pain she won't want to eat I hope she gets better soon

id get to the vet asap. She needs pain releif, that'll be why she's not eating.
Grinding the teeth is a sign of pain, my two were given pain releif for at least 5 days till the post op check.
Just say that you have seen her in pain and you want pain releif, you'll see her bounce back in no time.
Id also look at a different vet, if they are unwilling to give pain releif after a major op like that.
I mean think how long woman are put on pain meds after a c section or hysterectomy, its a big thing to happen to you.
Has she got any snugglesafe or hot water bottle wrapped in towels for her to lie on? Willow loved this and sat on it as it soothes her belly.
xxxx

I was given five days of pain relief. Doughnut didn't want any pellets for a few days just fresh stuff. If she stops eating I would go and get some pain relief.

When Milly was speyed the female vet didn't provide pain relief. I said she needed it, vet said she never gives pain relief after speys, I said 'well I wouldn't fancy a hysterectomy without pain relief'. Vet winced and gave me metacam...;)

Exactly, I think it's terrible that not all vets give it, especially as it's so hard to tell if a rabbit is in pain.

My vet is a rabbit specialist.
And when we talk about by bird not getting pain meds after spays she is appalled.
Its such a shame that some people have to educate the vet and not the other way around.
Hope you get her some metacam, that will help her perk up and want to eat xxx
