  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit isnt eating

We have a very large dwarf lop eared male house rabbit, he is approximately 3 years old and has been neutered. For the last 2 week (approx) he has refused food but is still drinking plenty of water, We took him to the vets on boxing day and they could not see any obvious signs as to why he would not be eating, they gave him an injection for pain relief (in case he was in pain) and they also gave us Baytril (antibiotics) to be given twice a day in case he had an infection of any sort.... Up until wed this week, there has been no improvement, so we took him back to the vet, who decided it must be his teeth. We had him sedated today for a thorough check of his teeth and mouth, the vet advised there is no issues at all with his mouth/teeth and could not answer why he is not eating and gave us more antibiotics for the next 2 weeks!! He drinks plenty and to encourage him to eat, we've been giving him is favourite fruit and veg but all he does is take a couple of small bites and then licks it. He is passing urine no problem but there has been no stools in his cage for a while..he was weighed on the 26th December and was approx 3.10kgs and when we weighed him today hes was 2.8kgs... can anyone please help or advise? thanks in advance

Sorry, I meant to ask... Did they check his gut for a blockage or do any X-rays?..

It would be usual for vet to check tummy for blockage, check temperature, hydration, colour (of gums) and check teeth thoroughly with a special instrument. If no blockage is found it is usual for the vet to give painkillers, gut mobilisers, an antacid sometimes, fluids if necessary and the owner to be advised to syringe feed a recovery food at regular intervals whilst keeping bunny warm(inside) and offering tempting foods, greens, grass, fresh herbs, a little grated carrot etc. if your vet has not done these things I would insist that they do or find another more bunny savvy vet - you could post a new thread asking for a recommendation to one in your area.

Not eating is often a symptom of another, underlying problem.

I would seek an opinion from another Vet

I would expect the Vet to run some diagnostics including a full blood profile and an abdominal ultra-sound (no GA needed)

By now it is likely that there will be some abnormalities in his Liver function and he will require intensive nursing care if he is to recover

I would advise you to seek the second opinion today as time is not on his side

Good luck
