  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Worming information please

I really want my two bunnies to stay as healthy as possible, and I need to buy food for them soon so I was thinking of buying some panacur as well. I've read lots of different things about it and I'm not really sure whether to worm them or not. I don't want to give them things unnecessarily but if its better for them and lowers the risk of them getting ill then it seems like a good thing to do. If I do worm them what wormer do I use? I've heard of panacur I'm not sure if theres any other/better ones? They don't come into contact with other animals (I have a cat who isn't wormed - my parents prefer to worm him as a treatment rather than preventative and I don't really have much say on the cat because he's my parents whereas the bunnies are mine) I also look after dogs who are wormed. My bunnies sometimes go out on the grass but not very often and obviously any dog/cat waste is cleaned up straight away so is there any need to worm them?
If I do which is the best way to do it? How long should I worm them for and how often?

Are you thinking about treating for Intestinal worms or as a means of controlling EC ?

I do not routinely treat my Rabbits for intestinal worms, never have in the last 16 years and so far never had a problem

For EC control I treat every Rabbit I take in with a one off 28 day course of Panacur. I do not treat again unless advised to do so by my Vet. IMO over-use of Panacur- ie doing 3/4 short courses a year- is likely to do more harm than good.

I don't worm my buns either, and have never had any problems with worms over the last 20 years of keeping buns. However a couple of years ago I did keep a stock of panacur just in case I need to treat EC or worms, but have never used it and had to throw it away as it was out of date.
