Rehomed: 2 male degus - Surrey

SarahP

Wise Old Thumper
Starlight Trust have three degu boys looking for homes.

These boys came into rescue because their previous owner passed away. Tragically, she wasn't found for some time and most of the pets did not survive.

Thankfully, these boys were luckier and their only lasting damage as such is that two of them are missing part of their tails. This is not unusual in degus so it's hard to be sure how this happened but it may be that the cats in the home, who were also starving, had tried to grab them through the bars. The tails are completely healed and this feature actually makes it very easy to tell them apart.

One boy has a short, stumpy tail. We have called him Cabo which is a Spanish word for stump (for those who are not aware, degus are from Chile so we decided to go with a Spanish naming theme!). Cabo is very much top degu and likes to get his own way.

One has half a tail so he has been called Semi. He is naughty and cheeky and likes to sit on your shoulder. He is likely to need ongoing dental work. Please contact us if you'd like to discuss this.

And finally there is Lleno, Spanish for full, as he has all his tail. He is the lowest ranking of the three and, consequently, a bit underweight at the moment. We're trying to help him get his full share of the food. He likes to come and snuggle on your lap when they're free ranging.

These boys will make great pets and would be suitable for a first time degu owner. They are confident and friendly and very happy to be handled.

Degus do need particular care which we would be very happy to discuss in detail with anyone who is interested. They are great fun and have the advantage over many rodent pets that they are relatively long lived, potentially reaching double figures, though more usually 6-8. We don't know how old these boys are but they seem fairly young so I'd make an educated guess of about two.

We also often keep degus with chinchillas and these boys will shortly be moving in with two of our resident chins while they wait for their new home. So if you're a chinchilla owner and you think you may have space in your cage, do get in touch to talk about this option.

UPDATE 2nd January 2013: Semi is now unfortunately no longer up for rehoming, as he has some ongoing medical issues that are currently under investigation.
