  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Panacur treatment

Young Bun
Is there any easy ways to give to your rabbit. Bunny is so hard to pick up. She comes and sits all over you no bother but she seems to sense when you are about to try give the treatment and runs away all the time. Help...

Will she take the syringe from you at all without you picking her up? I know it sounds strange but some bunnies will.

If not then maybe try a 'bunny burrito' where you wrap bunny up tightly in a towel burrito-style so they can't wriggle as much and then syringe in to their mouth. Be sure not to tip the bunny back though so you don't trance them but this is what we used to have to do for Starbuck.

If I try to force them, mine won't take any medicine. But if I act like it is a treat, they lick panacur straight from the syringe. For my slightly more fussy bunny, I usually got a quarter of a carrot, cut a furrow into it and filled it with the panacur.

My fail-safe, for all nasty-tasting medicines, is Critical Care, the recovery food. I simply mix some up and put it in a bowl and mix in the meds - it is a strong flavour so disguises everything, and they LOVE it.

We syringe meds into bitesized shredded wheat by making a little whole in the top then allowing it to dry a bit and the buns eat it.

Live and learn! Thanks for that.
