  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

EC/Headtilt treatment question

Someone at work has a bunny who is being treated for EC by (IMO) a non rabbit savvy vet.

The bunny's owner has tried to tell me what meds its having but is a bit clueless herself about it all, apparently the bunny is being given 'something for the worms ' which begins with L ....any ideas anyone??

I'm not convinced its panacur and I'm really trying to get her to book an appointment with the vet treating Doris.

The vet treating the other bunny is at the point of recommending pts and says it will not ever improve, the bunny has been treated for just over a month.

Please tell your colleague that with the right treatment they can make a full recovery, my beautiful Buttercup is testament to that, she had terrible head tilt caused by EC nearly three years ago and was ill for 6-8 weeks. A rabbit savvy vet is a must, as is a 28 day dose of panacur and metacam to bring down the inflammation in the brain. She should also be bleaching out the rabbit's environment as the EC spores can live for 28 days outside of the body - I wonder though if ear infections have been ruled out as as we know not every episode of head tilt is caused by EC.

Any use printing out something from on here?

Hope she accepts your help - we trawled Buttercup through various vet practices and vets before we found her saviour.

Good luck xx

I hope she will too, my Doris has been having treatment since the end of september and is showing some improvement now .....I've even offered to take the rabbit myself if it comes to pts ,I'd sooner get it treated and see if he can get better.

Hopefully she will go to my vet,I've given her their card and the name of the vet treating Doris.

I agree with one of the family, bun should have metacam and the bleach cleaning needs to be done too.
Hope bunny is on the mend.

Roger was diagnosed with EC and treated with Panacur, and the vet seemed so certain and knowledgable as to what was wrong with him, but at the end of the day we had a massive fall out, he completely misdiagnosed EC, Roger failed to improve at all, which was hardly surprising at the vet didn't actually know anything about rabbits. He suggested Roger was pts, and I feel sick at the number of people over the years who would have lost their beloved bunnies, because this guy seemed to know what he was talking about. Thank goodness, because Roger was so special to me, I felt that I could only have him pts following a 2nd opinion, and the 2nd vet agreeing with the first. I contacted Rabbit and Guinea Pig Welfare in Rugby, which is where I live and asked Tracy who she used. She told me about the amazing Simon Maddox who has a rabbit clinic in Northampton, and I immediately made an appointment for him to see Roger. Well, he didn't have EC at all, he had Pasturella, and as soon as he was put on pain relief and really strong antibiotics, within 24hrs Roger started to improve dramatically, and yet the other vet would have pts. I made formal complaints, involved The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, and am currently still in the process of persuading them to train vets much more than at present. It's disgusting and horrific that rabbits are considered 'exoctics', and as such vets receive a ridiculous half a days training out of 5yrs, which is no where near enough especially when rabbits are supposed to be the 3rd most popular pet. I have no time at all for vets that don't specialise in rabbits, and would not ever take my buns to a vet that sees cats and dogs etc. All 3 of my rabbits are registered now with Simon, and I really don't think I would be able to keep rabbits, if I did not have him as a vet.
